Services & Programs

Direct Support

Direct support, delivered with dignity.

Direct support for individuals, and long-term programmes that shift policy and culture. Both are how lasting change gets made.

01

Legal Aid

RIA provides legal referral and rights support services to transgender and intersex persons by connecting individuals with trusted legal practitioners and partner organisations. We facilitate access to legal advice and representation on matters relating to gender identity, gender expression, discrimination, access to justice, and the protection and promotion of human rights. Through strategic partnerships, we work to ensure that community members can access timely, informed and affirming legal support while strengthening awareness of their rights under Botswana's legal framework.

02

Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

RIA recognises that mental health is fundamental to the wellbeing of transgender and intersex persons. We provide mental health and psychosocial support by facilitating access to affirming counselling services, professional mental health referrals, peer support, and community-based wellbeing initiatives. Our approach promotes resilience, self-acceptance and emotional wellbeing while addressing the impacts of stigma, discrimination and social exclusion. This service is grounded in dignity, confidentiality, respect, and a commitment to creating safe and affirming environments for all.

03

Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)

RIA is committed to advancing equitable access to comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information, services and resources for transgender and intersex persons — including evidence-based education on HIV and STIs, prevention, testing, treatment, care and ongoing support. RIA also facilitates access to appropriate HIV prevention commodities and barrier methods that respond to the diverse needs of our communities. Our SRHR programming is grounded in dignity, bodily autonomy, informed choice, confidentiality and equal access to quality healthcare.

Flagship Programmes

Three programmes driving lasting change.

Collective Power

Transgender-Focused Program. RIA's flagship programme, dedicated to advancing the rights, dignity, inclusion and wellbeing of transgender and gender-diverse persons. Through evidence-based advocacy, community empowerment, capacity building and strategic partnerships, Collective Power addresses systemic barriers to justice, healthcare, education, employment and legal recognition. Key focus areas: Legal Gender Recognition (LGR), SRHR, and Key Population programming.

Hands Off Our Genitals

Intersex-Focused Program. Dedicated to protecting the bodily autonomy, dignity and human rights of intersex persons. The programme advocates for an end to medically unnecessary and non-consensual surgical interventions on intersex infants and children, promoting informed consent and bodily integrity through community education, policy advocacy, healthcare provider engagement and coalition building.

Creative Minds

Transgender & Intersex Program. Promotes social and economic inclusion through sports, arts, entrepreneurship and creative expression. Tournaments, exhibitions, business development initiatives and skills-building workshops challenge stereotypes, celebrate diversity, and build resilience, innovation and community empowerment.

Community-Led Impact
